| Horticulture is the science and art of
growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. The science
of horticulture explores the relationships between botany, climate, soil,
sun, exposure, water and mineral needs and plant development; the art
of horticulture utilizes such relationships to create harmony, beauty
and rhythm through garden layout, form, texture, style, and color. |

This eastern-facing garden in the semi-Mediterranean climate of San Rafael, California, generates an Asian feel with its Japanese red split-leaf maple, cascading rosemary, softening the front edge of the stone wall, and Erigeron enlivening the base of the stone stair and providing year-round flowers. The Liriope, seen in the upper left, adds long, leafy curves to reflect the curving stairs, while the bamboo in the background is allowed to dance with the wind. |
